Grocery Store Multiplication

Complex and simple everyday applications use multiplication to complete specific tasks.
A simpler concept of multiplication can be demonstrated with a trip to the grocery store.

If a shopper wished to have two oranges everyday, a small amount of multiplication would help in determining how many oranges to buy: 2x7=14, the shopper would want to purchase fourteen oranges.

Next, the cost of the fourteen oranges is determined by multiplying the weight times a cost per pound.

The cost of the oranges is fifty cents per pound and the oranges weigh four pounds, so 4x.50=2 shows the oranges will cost two dollars total.

Moving further through the grocery store a sale item is noticed, advertising twenty percent off the original price for a loaf of bread.

A little multiplication is needed to figure the new cost of the bread on sale, where the original cost of the bread is $4.00 and 4x20% or 4x.20=.80, 4-.80=3.20.

A shopper uses multiplication one last time in the grocery store during checkout, when sales tax is figured on all the products purchased.

If the shopper’s groceries total $25.00 and the sales tax is 8%, then the shopper would owe an extra $2.00 in taxes, 25x8% or 25x.08=2.

The grocery store clerk also uses multiplication to quickly ring in identical products in one order.

If a customer purchases three bars of soap that cost $2.00 each, the clerk can multiply the price of soap to the number of bars, 3x2=6.

The grocery store shift schedule is created by the store manager, who uses multiplication to staff according to shopper traffic.

Sundays afternoon is the busiest shopping time of the week and the store manager knows that each register will need to be staffed, as well as assigning a separate bagger to each cashier.

There are twelve checkout lanes in the store, and the manager needs a cashier and bagger for each lane; multiplication shows the schedule needs to have twenty-four people working, 12x2=24.

The grocery store manager also ran a sale on Sunday, and would like to determine the percentage of revenue collected from the sale product.

To find the total percentage of revenue collected from the sale, a two step division and multiplication problem is used: 1500/8000=.1875 or 18.75% and 8000x18.75%=1500, showing the item on sale generated 18.75% of revenue.

Whether or not the special should be run again can be determined through the analysis of targeted goals based on the percentage of revenue generated from the sale.

From the customer, to cashier, and all the way to store management, multiplication is used to help the grocery store and shoppers buy and sell everyday products.
