Innovative Graduates From Distance Education Degree Programs Needed For Emerging Fields Of Geothermal, Wind, Biomass and solar Energy

Many colleges and universities are preparing students for careers centered around sustainability and the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) studies. Healthcare training also remains popular among college offerings. Students seeking to pursue studies in these areas might find scholarships, fellowships and grants for college readily available.

Sustainability encompasses everything from human and ecological health and secure livelihoods to a better world for all generations, according to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Education web site. A Pennsylvania university as part of a strategic plan into 2014 noted that sustainability is a leader in the areas of academic and public interest. The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Education works with colleges and universities to model and advance sustainability in different ways, including what they teach and research.

Energy is among the college programs offered in the area of sustainability. A Renewable Energy Engineering Program at an Oregon technical institute is designed to prepare students for jobs in solar, wind, biomass and geothermal energy, according to a July 2010 Oregonian report on the web. A green energy program planned for an Ohio community college is expected to draw some 450 students and help more than 200 people retain their positions in the energy sector, according to a June report on The Zanesville Times Recorder web site.

As for the STEM subjects, scientific and technological innovations contribute to the country's competitiveness and its role as a global economic leader, a National Career Development Association article noted, including news from the National Academies. Nearly one-quarter million math and science teaching positions could open by 2016, according to a STEM subjects panel forecast in 2007.Future STEM graduates might find themselves working with technologies that enable different means of communications and lengthen life spans, one university noted.

Healthcare, technical and STEM subject occupations are among the fastest growing employment opportunities for the college educated that are listed as part of a Georgetown University study designed to help students align their education with employment opportunities. Communication services and arts and education occupations also were listed as fast growing employment opportunities. By 2018, the Georgetown study noted, the United States is expected to need more college educated workers than colleges produce, with available jobs by that time expected to also include areas such as government and public education services, information and private education services, professional and business services and health care services, which require at least some college training.

Health care is actually expected to remain a large source of job growth into 2016, according to July 2009 projections from the President's Council of Economic Advisers. The report forecast developments in the U.S. Labor market over the next 5 to 10 years, citing medical records, health information technicians, registered nurses, clinical lab technicians and physical therapists among those in health care. Growth is expected also in areas such as construction, with a need for skilled plumbers and electricians and areas of manufacturing such as aerospace and pharmaceuticals, according to the report. Workers are better positioned for good jobs if they acquire additional training, the report noted.

Foundations and charities that supported education last year made the STEM subjects a top priority, a January Chronicle of Higher Education article noted. There's a labor shortage of women and racial-ethnic minorities in STEM fields that's expected to continue, a Pennsylvania university noted. In addition to colleges, universities and technical schools that offer STEM scholarships, students might find organizations that tailor scholarships like these to specific demographic groups.

The mother nature Network recently listed a “top 10” list of environmental scholarships, including the Morris K. Udall Scholarship; the Department of natural Resources' Environmental Education Scholarship, and the Windstar Environmental Studies Scholarship. Health care scholarships and fellowships also are readily available and applicable to many online distance learning programs for students to get their bachelor science degree.. The Charlotte McGuire Scholarship Fund and the Academy of medical-Surgical Nurses are a few sources of scholarships for nurses. The National Institutes of Health is among several organizations that provide general healthcare scholarships. A Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship awards as much as $10,000 to third year medical students.
